BACK OFF!
How many women do you know who will share their clothing sizes with the world? Did I just raise my hand?
My pant size is a comfortable size 12 (Translation: I am not overly concerned about sitting down and having a button fly off and hit someone in the eye!) I am seriously working on getting down to a comfortable size 10 and, in fact, purchased a pair of size 10 jeans last weekend. Yeah! (Watch out if you see me sit down though.) I wistfully dream about the days (to be more precise, 9.42 days in August of 1992) when I was a size 8.
The problem is, no matter what my size over the last 20 years, I have this extra layer around my middle. Don't you dare laugh! If you are over the age of forty, you probably have it too.
Do you remember the movie called Rumor Has It, with Jennifer Anniston, Shirley MacLaine, and Kevin Costner? It is a movie about the story that is supposed to be the REAL story BEHIND the story about Mrs. Robinson.
Well, there is a scene in which Jennifer Anniston and Kevin Costner attend a formal affair (I forget why) and. upon entering the ballroom, Jennifer Anniston's gaze focuses on the back of a rather large woman in a strapless gown. Deadpan, she comments, "What's with the back cleavage?"
That line may have elicited a theater full of laughter but I can tell you honestly that, not only was that line NOT funny to me, it has given me nightmares! Would you like to know why?
Pictures are worth millions, so, instead of me telling you, I think you should find out for yourself. What you need to do is go into your bathroom and take off all your clothes. (Sounds like we are off to a great start, eh?) Now, with your back facing the mirror, twist around and look at your back.
Scary, isn't it?
As old as we might think we look in front, our backs are in an even sorrier state. Admit it, did you try to get rid of that extra ripple of skin by sucking in your gut, standing up taller, or twisting and turning a different way? It didn't work, did it? Yikes! It's enough to make you want bury your head (and back) in a mountain of M&Ms!
I think part of the problem is that as we get older, the vertebrae in our spines begin to shrink, our muscles weaken, our posture slumps, and we get shorter. So, what happens to all the soft parts of our bodies? It scrunches up of course! It's like, after the age of forty, we need to lose weight every year just to keep up with our ever shortening body frames! (I am sure there is a mathematical formula one can use. Using my own calculations, it would amount to needing to drop about 2-3 pounds for every inch lost in height.)
Well, I for one have decided to find out if I can eliminate that unwanted roll of skin (and get into a size 8 again!)- without surgery, major illness, or death!
Here's what I am going to do. Starting in April, I will be conducting an experiment using Heart Math. Last month I attended a seminar led by Brad Hubbell of Medicine in Balance. He demonstrated a heart rhythm coherence feedback system developed by Heart Math that will help an individual to relax more and reduce stress. As it turns out, stress is not only bad for your heart, it is bad for your waistline. Brad shared his own story in which he lost 15 pounds in just a few months after starting to use the HeartMath monitor. There is a bunch of science surrounding Heart Math and I don't want to go into it right now. i am letting you know, though, that I will be blogging about the experience and my progress on www.SearchHolistic.com. I plan to start this project the beginning of April, so you might want to check in on www.SearchHolistic.com over the next few weeks.
Bye bye back cleavage!
