ANOTHER MAINE TRIP
This newsletter is late because I was in Maine for over a week. This time I went to Monhegan Island, Maine, which is 12 miles off the Maine coast.
"Why would you go to Monhegan?" you ask. Monhegan is well known as an artist community. It is rugged, beautiful, and remote - and I had a great time. I had intended to work while I was there - including working on this newsletter. However, internet access was limited (as was a good cell phone connection) and, frankly, I really didn't feel like working once I got there.

First, let me give you a small flavor of Monhegan: To get there you have to take a ferry out of either Port Clyde, Boothbay Harbor, or New Harbor. The shortest ferry ride is one hour long and, because you are in open ocean for a good part of the ride, it is not always a gentle ride. (On the way out, we had a significant ocean chop as well as some interesting swells. I was standing on the bow of the boat talking with a woman from Omaha, NE. About half-way out, the bow dipped and a wave of water crashed on top of me.)
The island is only 1.75 miles long and less than a mile wide. Two thirds of the island is set aside as protected land. Although you are permitted to walk the many trails, no camping or off trail exploring is permitted. No cars are permitted on the island so you have to walk everywhere - on unpaved gravel, stone, and dirt roads and walkways - take a guess as to what happens when it rains? Needless to say there are no street lights so you have to take a flashlight with you if you go out at night.
The second evening I was there I was invited to dinner at the island home of friends of friends. The house is located at the southern end of the island and has a lovely garden and spectacular views. The ten people in the dinner party partook of an exceptional meal and delightful art-related after dinner conversation.
Move forward a couple of hours. Time to walk back to our own lodgings. Rain, lots of rain. Lightning, lots of lightning. Thunder, big booms!
Now, I admit that I am unfamiliar with island storms. Perhaps they only SEEM a lot closer because there are no large buildings or mountains to act as a barrier to the storm.
All I know is that we had to walk about half a mile back to where we were staying and we got REALLY, REALLY wet (even with wearing a rain jacket) and my formerly white pants were quickly transformed into a dripping mass of brown spotches. (I have since learned that the words Monhegan and white are rarely used in the same sentence unless you are talking about the crashing surf.) On top of this, the lightning was lighting our path at such a rate we barely needed the flashlights.
For some of you reading this, Monhegan may not appear to be much of a vacation. For me, though, it was a peaceful haven (or heaven.) Since there is not a lot to do there, I relaxed and enjoyed the cooler temperatures (there were a couple of evenings where some folks built fires in their fireplaces - we could smell them.)
So, now you know where you can go if you want to truly "get away from it all." Leave behind your bikes, golf clubs, tennis rackets, and bathing suits (the water is extremely cold.) Bring with you an open attittude, a sense of humor, and a willingness to just BE.
